## Combining racks with bikepacking bags: the setup to start from

Run a rear rack with a roll-top dry bag for your sleep kit, a half-frame bag for dense items and water, and a bar roll for the shelter. Fit panniers only when food or water carry forces it. One rule decides everything else: **rigid deck for bulky and light, inside-the-wheelbase soft bags for dense and heavy.**

Most hybrids are not designed. They are accumulated. A rider owns a soft-bag kit, runs out of room, bolts a rack onto the back of it, keeps the seat pack anyway, and now carries two systems' worth of hardware to solve one system's problem. A hybrid earns its weight only when each half removes a job from the other. If you could take the rack off and nothing would change except total volume, you did not build a hybrid — you built a heavier soft-bag kit. The [bikepacking racks and panniers](/posts/bikepacking-racks-panniers-guide) decision gets posed as a choice between camps, and for most riders it is neither.

<Highlight label="The short version">

- Rack deck: bulky and light. Sleep kit in a roll-top dry bag, spare insulation, a wet fly.
- Soft bags inside the wheelbase: dense and heavy. Water, food, tools, fuel, spares.
- A rack usually means deleting the seat pack, not keeping it. Both want the same air above the tyre.
- Panniers are a module you fit per trip, not a permanent fixture.
- Two straps minimum over the deck rails, and no loose tails near a wheel.

## Why hybrids win: each part doing the job it is genuinely better at

The [bikepacking bags versus panniers](/posts/bikepacking-bags-vs-panniers) framing presents two pure systems and asks you to pick a tribe. Your packing list has no tribes. It holds two physically different kinds of object — a sleeping bag that is nearly all volume and no mass, and water and food that are the reverse — and no one carry system is good at both.

A rigid deck is good at bulk. Volume on tubing does not sag, because the deck rather than the fabric carries the load. The same volume hung off saddle rails has nothing underneath it, which is why large seat packs sway under out-of-saddle pedalling and why so much seat-pack design goes into bracing. Bikepacking.com makes the same argument in its review of the Ride Forward Designs J-Bag, reckoning that a fixed rack is steadier than a soft saddle-mounted bag and that a light rack can weigh less than a dropper-compatible seat pack. That is the honest case for the rack half of a hybrid: not more capacity, better behaved capacity.

Soft bags inside the wheelbase are good at density. Alpkit's packing guide calls the frame bag the ideal home for heavy kit — food, tools, water bottles, fuel canisters — because it sits at the bike's centre of gravity, and Polygon's guide states the principle plainly: the further weight moves from the centre, the more it affects balance. Mass out at the ends of the bike raises the effort needed to change direction, so a loaded deck and a loaded bar roll both make steering feel slow, while the same kilogram in a [half-frame bag](/posts/best-frame-bags-bikepacking) barely registers. The rear has its own failure mode — Alpkit's guide puts it as high, rearward weight creating a pendulum effect, especially on technical terrain.

The hybrid is a division of labour, not a compromise, and we take the mass question further in [packing for weight distribution](/posts/pack-bikepacking-bags-weight-distribution).

## What goes on the deck, what goes in the soft bags, and what can go either way

Sort your kit by density before size. Anything light for its volume wants the deck, the only place that holds a big soft object in shape without strapping it to something that moves. Anything heavy for its volume wants to be low, central and inside the wheelbase.

- **Rack deck, in a roll-top dry bag:** sleeping bag or quilt, sleeping mat, spare insulation, camp shoes, a wet fly you want away from everything dry.
- **Half-frame bag:** water bladder or bottles, dense food, tools, spares, pump, stove fuel, battery pack.
- **Bar roll:** shelter body and poles, or the sleep kit if the deck is carrying food instead.
- **Panniers, when fitted:** resupply food and water volume, bear canister, anything bulky you picked up mid-trip.
- **Either way, decide by trip:** cook kit, clothing, camera gear. The swing items tell you whether you needed the rack at all.

If the swing items all fit in the soft bags, the rack is carrying only the sleep kit.

<SectionDivider variant="rule" />

## The space above the rear tyre: a rack usually deletes the seat pack

A rack deck and a [seat pack](/posts/best-saddle-bags-bikepacking) both occupy the air above the rear tyre, and only one of them can have it. Run both and the pack sits on the deck, loses its compression and traps the load underneath, so you cannot open either without unpacking both. **In a hybrid, the rack replaces the seat pack — it does not join it.**

The clearance figures are tighter than people expect. Bikepacking.com's index of dropper-post seat bags puts the requirement for most dropper-specific packs at roughly 13 to 23 cm between the rear tyre and the saddle, and notes that larger packs risk tyre contact or leave you helping the post back to full height. Riders on the eMTB forums make the point from the other direction: the rear tyre rises towards a saddle pouch as the shock compresses, with or without a dropper. On the Bear Bones forum, one rider using a Wolf Tooth collar to limit dropper travel reported getting only about a third of the travel back. A rack sidesteps all of it by hanging the load off the frame and axle instead of the post, which is why full-suspension and small-frame bikes are where the hybrid stops being a preference. We cover that case in [racks on full-suspension bikes](/posts/racks-full-suspension-bikes).

The second conflict in the same centimetres is mounting hardware. Seat-pack and dropper-collar mounts want the saddle rails and exposed post; rack struts and their seat-tube or seatstay clamps want almost the same space. Symptom: the pack's rail hook will not seat because a strut head is in the way, or the strut bolt is unreachable with the pack fitted. Fix: mount the rack first, bolts torqued, then decide what else can live back there.

<Warning title="Strap tails and tyre contact are the two failures that end rides">

Both hazards here are quiet until they are not. A soft load creeping rearward and down will touch the tyre, and a spinning tyre will abrade a dry bag through fast. A loose strap tail is worse: anything dangling near the rear wheel can be drawn into the spokes, where it becomes a brake you did not ask for. Check clearance with the bike loaded and the suspension compressed, not standing in the hallway, and leave no tail long enough to reach a rotating part.

</Warning>

## Tube diameters, heel strike, and the real estate you quietly lose

**Strap keepers care about your rack's tubing.** Voile's rack strap is sold in 20, 25 and 32 inch lengths, and in two hook sizes: its own listing for the 10 mm version says the strap snap-fits 10 mm tubing and is compatible with most bikepacking racks, baskets and cargo systems, and it sells a separate 13 mm-hook version for fatter tube. BIKEPACKING.com, covering the strap's launch, describes the pair as one fixed anchor hook and one floating adjustable hook. Hook size is not something you can split the difference on: measure your rack's tube before buying straps for it. A hook on the edge of seating fails on washboard, not in the car park.

**Heel strike arrives when packing pushes rearward.** Add a frame bag and your packing centre moves back; add panniers and your heels find them. Riders on CycleChat report a consistent set of fixes: mounting the bags as far back on the rail as they will go, a more offset rack for short chainstays, checking the bag is fitted the right way round so a front pocket is not in the path of your heel, and tubular rather than square bag shapes. The caveat is ours rather than theirs — every centimetre you move a loaded bag rearward puts mass further from the middle of the bike, which is the handling cost the rack was meant to avoid.

**Frame-bag straps and rack mounts want the same tube.** A rack with a seat-tube clamp and a frame bag whose rear straps wrap that tube will fight each other: the strap rides up onto the clamp and slackens, or the clamp cannot be tightened over webbing without the webbing creeping. Route those straps above or below the clamp, never across it, and re-check tension after the first hour.

**And the deck eats your lighting.** A dry bag strapped over the back of a rack covers exactly the area where a rear light, a mudguard and a reflector live. The retail listing for Tubus's Logo Evo says it suits rear lights with a 50 mm bolt spacing, which only helps if the mount is still visible with the bag on. If it is not, the light moves to the seatstay or onto the bag before the trip, not after dark.

## Strapping a load to a deck so that it is still there at the end of the day

Use webbing with a cam buckle, or a rubber composite strap. Voile sells its straps as the alternative to duct tape, nylon straps and bungee cords — a maker claim, but the mechanics hold up: a cam or a stretched rubber strap holds tension at a set length, while a bungee's tension varies with every bump and nothing stops its hooks unhooking. **A bungee cord is a tensioner, not a fastener, and a dry bag on a rack deck needs a fastener.**

Strap over the deck rails rather than around the frame tubing where you can. Over the rails clamps the load onto the deck, the direction you want the force to go; around tubing lets the load rotate on the tube as a hinge. Two straps minimum, spaced apart: one strap gives the load an axis to pivot around, two give it none. Then fold the tails back under the strap or tuck them into the dry bag closure, so nothing hangs.

Then do the parking-lot shake test: lift the bike by the saddle, drop it a few centimetres, and try to rotate the load fore and aft. If it shifts in your hand, it will shift on the trail, and a load that walks rearward finds the tyre.

<Tip title="Trim or tuck every strap tail, every time">

At the end of packing, run a hand along each strap and follow the tail. Ten seconds, and it removes the only failure mode here that can lock a wheel. Straps sized for the job beat long straps with a folded tail.

</Tip>

A deck load counts against the rack's rating, not around it. ISO 11243, the luggage-carrier standard that superseded EN 14872 in Europe, tests the carrier with static vertical and lateral loads and dynamic loading, and its scope explicitly excludes removable bags and baskets. The number on the spec sheet describes the carrier, not your strap job. That distinction, and the bolt torques that keep the rack attached, is why [rack weight limits and bolt torque](/posts/bike-rack-weight-limits-bikepacking) is its own guide.

<SectionDivider variant="ornamental" />

## The weight question, honestly

A rack is hardware you are adding, and the published figures we can check cluster in a narrow band. Tubus's Logo Evo is listed at about 738 g with a 26 kg maximum load, and the same listing explains the odd rating: a rack rated 27 kg or above counts as child-seat approved under ISO 11243:2016, so this one is held at 26 kg despite passing the test at 40 kg. Old Man Mountain gives the Elkhorn as 623 g short and 652 g tall, both with 6 inch extenders, rated to 25 lb or 11.34 kg, while Tour Magazin gives its own Elkhorn setup as 838 g “ready to ride”, without saying what that included. A Backpacking Light forum poster comparing the two quotes 690 g for the rack alone against 420 g for a seat bag. Treat 400 to 900 g as the planning range and check your own rack's spec sheet.

That is a real tax, and on a short trip it buys nothing. **If you are out for one night, riding technical singletrack, or running a frame with no rack provision, do not buy the rack — a pure soft-bag kit is lighter, quieter and cheaper, and the honest answer is that you do not need a hybrid.** The rack starts paying when the load is bulky enough to sag a seat pack, long enough to need resupply volume, or awkward enough that your frame cannot host a seat pack at all.

<PullQuote>A hybrid that duplicates jobs is not a system. It is just a heavier bike.</PullQuote>

## Three worked setups, and the module you add or drop

**Overnighter, no resupply.** No rack. Bar roll for the sleep kit, half-frame bag for water, tools and food, small seat pack or none at all. One night of food fits inside the wheelbase, so the rack would carry nothing the frame bag cannot. This is the [two-day essentials](/posts/weekend-bikepacking-two-day-essentials) kit, and the setup most people over-build.

**Long weekend, two to three nights.** Rack on, seat pack off. Sleep kit in a roll-top dry bag on the deck under two straps; shelter on the bars; frame bag holding water, food and tools. The rack is doing a job the seat pack did badly, and handling improves rather than degrades because the dense items never left the middle of the bike. No panniers: deck plus frame bag covers three days.

**Multi-week with resupply gaps.** Same spine, with panniers fitted only for the legs that need them. This is where panniers stop being a lifestyle and become a part — hooks on for the long stretch with one shop, hooks off when resupply is daily. Choose them for mounting hardware rather than volume, which is the argument of our guide to [the best panniers for bikepacking](/posts/best-panniers-bikepacking). Put food and water in the panniers, keep the deck for the sleep kit regardless, and re-check heel clearance the first time they go on loaded.

The modularity is the point: one rack, one frame bag, one bar roll, one dry bag, and panniers that live in a cupboard between the trips needing them.

## The bottom line

Build the hybrid deliberately: bulky light gear on the deck, dense heavy gear in the soft bags, delete whichever part is doing a job twice, fit panniers per trip rather than per bike. Everything that goes wrong with a hybrid goes wrong in the few centimetres above the rear tyre or at the end of a strap, so measure clearance loaded and check your tails. ## The Short Answer for a Bikepacking Rack on a Full-Suspension Bike

Use a rack that mounts to the rear axle and travels with the swingarm, or one that clamps only to the rear stays with no seatpost attachment at all. Rule out seatpost-clamp racks and any strut that bridges the moving rear triangle. On a small frame the fix is the same — volume on a deck above the tyre, not hanging off the saddle.

Riders arrive expecting to be told to buy a bigger seat pack. The honest answer is usually a deck. Of everything we have written about [rack-based carry systems](/posts/bikepacking-racks-panniers-guide), **this is the one case where a rack beats a soft bag outright, and the reason is the dropper post.** A seat pack hangs off the saddle, so it descends with it; a deck sits above the tyre regardless of where the saddle went. BIKEPACKING.com's rear-rack gear index makes the same point, noting that racks are especially advantageous with a long-travel dropper because they leave the saddle area clear for the post to move fully, and suggesting a drybag strapped to the platform when a seat bag is too small.

<Highlight label="The short version">
- **Axle-mount racks are the strongest answer.** The load enters the axle and moves with the swingarm, so nothing has to change length through the travel.
- **Stay-mounted strap racks work when they touch the post nowhere.** Aeroe's FAQ states the Spider rear rack "fastens to the rear stays of a full suspension bike totally independent to the seat post."
- **Seatpost-clamp racks are out** — a dropper defeats them, and the clamp is a cantilever besides.
- **Nothing may bridge the seatpost and the moving rear triangle.** That span changes length as the shock compresses.
- **The ceilings are low and they are per rack, not per side** — 16 kg recommended total for Aeroe's Spider per its FAQ, 25 lb for Old Man Mountain's Elkhorn per its own listing.
- **Re-check sag and rebound with the load on.** Tailfin's own fitting guidance says the extra weight will affect your suspension.

## Why the Soft-Bag Default Fails on Exactly This Bike

The standard bikepacking answer — three soft bags, no hardware — assumes three spaces this bike does not have. The main triangle is full of shock and linkage, which is why [bikepacking bags versus panniers](/posts/bikepacking-bags-vs-panniers) resolves differently here than on a rigid frame. The space behind the saddle is governed by a post that moves. And the rear triangle moves relative to the seatpost through the travel.

That last one is the mechanism people miss. **A rack bolted between the seatpost and the moving rear triangle has to change length as the shock compresses, and it cannot, so it binds or it breaks.** No clever bracket escapes this; the two ends of the span are not rigid with respect to each other by design. Either the whole rack rides on the swingarm, or the whole rack rides on the front triangle — not both.

The dropper is the other constraint, and it fails more quietly. A seat pack sized with the saddle at full height sits somewhere else entirely when the post is slammed on a descent. BIKEPACKING.com's dropper-post seat bag index puts numbers on it: dropper-specific packs typically want roughly 5 to 8 inches, 13 to 23 cm, between saddle and rear tyre, and packs of 5 to 9 litres suit lightweight setups without affecting dropper function, while anything much larger risks tyre clearance problems. The same index recommends a rear rack or mountless rack when you need more volume.

Read that honestly and the usual recommendation inverts: if 9 litres is the practical ceiling on a dropper bike, advice to size up your [saddle bag](/posts/best-saddle-bags-bikepacking) is advice to buy something that will buzz the tyre on the first descent.

<PullQuote>A seat pack descends with the saddle. A deck does not care where the saddle went.</PullQuote>

<SectionDivider variant="rule" />

## The Mount Types That Work, Strongest First

Most full-suspension frames have no rack eyelets, so this is a load-path question before it is a product question — the ranking logic in [mounting a rack without eyelets](/posts/mounting-racks-without-eyelets) applies, with one rule layered on top: the load path must survive the travel.

### Axle-mount racks that travel with the swingarm

A fit kit replaces the rear thru-axle with one carrying threaded bosses, and the rack bolts to those. The load enters the axle, passes into the dropouts and then the swingarm — the path that already carries your weight — and because the rack rides the moving part, nothing has to bind. Old Man Mountain's Elkhorn is the reference design; Old Man Mountain lists a 25 lb, 11.4 kg, rating, and a Radavist long-term review notes the racks can be installed on full-suspension bikes using Robert Axle Project thru-axle mounting, with a reminder to use Robert Axle Project's axle finder to pick the correct axle for your bike. One retailer's rear fit kit listing specifies 174 to 189 mm thru-axle lengths with an M12 by 1.0 thread.

Tailfin takes the same approach and is explicit about the suspension problem. Its fitting guidance describes small bushings at the connection points that, in Tailfin's words, "allow each part to pivot and work with your rear suspension system", and for full-suspension bikes it recommends its fixed CargoPack (18 litre) or SpeedPack (10 litre) over the Carbon Pannier Rack, on the grounds that the fixed system is stronger off-road and lighter because there are fewer components. When a maker tells you which of its own products to buy for your case, that is the most useful sentence on the page.

Failure mode: a mismatched or under-torqued axle, which is not a failure you ride out. Follow the axle maker's documentation exactly.

### Stay-mounted strap racks, with no seatpost attachment

The second workable family braces off the seatstays on rubber-faced cradles held by tensioned straps and touches the post nowhere. Aeroe's FAQ is unusually direct about why that matters, stating that the Spider rear rack "fastens to the rear stays of a full suspension bike totally independent to the seat post" and calling it a good solution for dropper post and full-suspension use. Published capacity is a recommended total of 16 kg, 35 lb, spread across a maximum of 5 kg per cradle and 7 kg per Quick Mount Pod.

Two caveats worth more than the capacity figure. Bike-magazin's review of the same rack stresses that it must be positioned so the load never contacts the frame or seatpost even when the suspension is compressed — a clearance check in the stand is not the check that counts. And Tour-magazin's review found the load sits relatively high above the rear wheel, making the bike feel rear-heavy when fully loaded and costing it handling marks.

Failure mode: strap creep and cradle rotation rather than fracture. It loosens before it lets go, which is a virtue only if you check it.

### Minimalist cargo-cage decks

The low-volume answer is a deck with 3-pack bosses instead of pannier rails. Adventure Cycling's 2026 gear-trend piece describes them plainly — "instead of pannier rails, these minimalist racks sport 3-pack mounts on their uprights" — and frames the result as the dropper fix: "strap on a couple 5-liter dry bags, plus another 8 to 10 liters on the deck, and you have nearly 20 liters of stable, dropper-post-friendly capacity." Roughly 20 litres is not a touring load, but it is about double what the dropper will allow a seat pack, which is why we would start here for an overnight. Our notes on [the best rear racks for bikepacking](/posts/best-rear-racks-bikepacking) separate these decks from conventional four-point racks.

### The ones to rule out

Seatpost-clamp racks: incompatible with a dropper, and all the load goes through one clamp on a cantilever. Bolt-on struts bridging the travel path: covered above, and careful fitting does not fix geometry. Any clamp on a carbon stay the frame maker has not approved: no.

<Warning title="Two things that end in no, not in a workaround">
A strut bolted between the seatpost or front triangle and the moving rear triangle must change length through the travel. It will bind, and what gives way is a frame member or a fastener next to a spinning wheel. No torque setting makes this safe.

Clamping a carbon stay is a separate problem. Retailer listings for Aeroe's Spider halve the stated capacity to 8 kg on carbon frames, and Aeroe's FAQ tells carbon owners to use tape or old inner tube at the touch points and stay inside the weight and tightness figures in the product manual. Tailfin's fitting guidance goes further on frame mounts generally, strongly recommending you speak to your frame's manufacturer first because some frame mounts are rated only for mudguards. **If your frame maker will not state a rack capacity, treat the silence as the spec and do not clamp it.**
</Warning>

<SectionDivider variant="ornamental" />

## The Honest Capacity Ceiling

**A full-suspension bike will not carry a four-pannier touring load, and it should not be asked to.** A rack here is a capacity fix for a bike that had almost none — perhaps 9 litres of seat pack to perhaps 20 on a deck — not a route to touring weight.

The published figures make that point without help from us. Aeroe's recommended total is 16 kg for the entire rack, subdivided to 5 kg per cradle. The Elkhorn's listed rating is 25 lb, 11.4 kg, again for the rack rather than per side. A loaded four-pannier touring setup lives well above both, so the ceiling is not a matter of taste.

Two things to check before you load past halfway, neither of which the rack spec covers. The rear wheel was laced for rider weight and cornering loads, not a static mass hung behind the axle — engineering reasoning rather than a measured limit, but the reason we would not push a trail wheel to a rack's full rating. And brake and tyre clearance change through the travel, so check both at full compression, per Bike-magazin's warning.

If the trip genuinely needs touring volume, the honest answer is that this is the wrong bike for it. Take the hardtail, use a trailer, or move volume forward onto [front racks and low-riders](/posts/front-racks-bikepacking) — the only remaining direction on a bike whose rear end is this constrained.

<SectionDivider variant="trail" />

## Re-Set Your Suspension With the Load On

Adding static weight behind the rear axle changes what your shock was set up to do. Sag is measured at rider weight; the bike now carries rider weight plus a deck load, so both the sag figure and the rebound speed that suited it describe a bike you no longer have.

Tailfin says this plainly in its own guidance, advising that the extra weight carried on the bike will affect your suspension so sag should be adjusted accordingly, and recommending a test ride on a familiar trail with the new setup to adjust shock pressure, rebound and compression if available. **This is the step almost everyone skips**, and it is the cheapest improvement available on a loaded bike.

We will not give you pressures or click counts: the right numbers depend on your shock, your frame's leverage curve and your load. Your shock manufacturer publishes a recommended sag range for your frame — use that, with the bike loaded as you intend to ride it.

<Tip title="Do the loaded-sag check before the trip, not on it">
Set sag with the bags on and packed, in riding kit, the way the shock maker's guide describes. Then cycle the suspension to full compression and look for three things — tyre to bag clearance, tyre to deck clearance, and anything that has started to touch the frame or the dropper post. Repeat the check after the first hour of washboard, because tensioned straps take a set and relax.
</Tip>

## Small Frames and Short Riders Have the Same Problem, Milder

A small frame does not move underneath you, but the geometry lands in the same place: the triangle is small, so the frame bag is small, and a short seat tube with a low saddle compresses the saddle-to-tyre gap before a dropper is even involved.

BIKEPACKING.com's guide for shorter riders is blunt about it, stating that "no matter what wheel size you run, small frames and shorter saddle heights equate to limited tire clearance," with one author noting that the more a seat pack is stuffed, the more likely she is to buzz the tyre. The guide reaches the conclusion this article is built on, saying "a rack and bag pairing can virtually eliminate the possibility of hearing the dreaded buzzing of seat bag on tire." The margins are tight: one 15 litre seat pack's listing specifies a minimum of 8 inches from the seat rails to the top of the rear tyre, which a short seat tube may simply not offer.

Heel strike is the other effect. The same guide observes that the smaller you go in frame size, the greater your chances are of clipping your heel on the bottle — and the same shrinking clearances are what we would expect to bite the moment you set panniers rearward on a short chainstay. Low standover on a loaded bike also changes how it feels to mount and dismount on a slope — a fit question, not a bag question; [bike fit on a loaded bike](/posts/bike-fit-loaded-bikepacking) covers the part no rack solves. The same reasoning applies to plenty of XS and shorter-reach frames, and it is geometry, not a separate product category.

So: **a smaller seat pack plus a deck beats one oversized seat pack**, every time, on a small frame. Two medium volumes in two load paths are more stable and far less likely to rub than one large volume on a lever.

<SectionDivider variant="rule" />

## What Actually Belongs on the Deck

Put the bulky light things up there — sleep kit, shelter, insulation — and keep the dense things low and central. The split matters more here than on a rigid bike. The deck sits high, as Tour-magazin's rear-heavy finding shows, so every dense item up there is a lever on a bike you want to throw around — and weight behind the axle is exactly what your new suspension setup is compensating for.

So this ends up a hybrid system rather than a rack system — the deck carries volume, the remaining soft bags carry mass. [Combining racks with bikepacking bags](/posts/combining-racks-bikepacking-bags) is where that division of labour gets worked out, and our guide to [weight distribution when packing](/posts/pack-bikepacking-bags-weight-distribution) covers which items belong where. Use the deck for the awkward shapes a seat pack compresses badly.

## The Bottom Line

A full-suspension bike is not a bad bikepacking bike. It is a bike whose carrying spaces were spent on a shock and a dropper, and the hardware answer is narrower than the soft-bag answer most guides reach for. Mount to the axle so the load travels with the swingarm, or clamp only to the stays with nothing touching the post. Verify clearance compressed, not in the stand. Re-set sag loaded. And treat 20 litres as the win it is instead of chasing a load this bike was never going to carry.

For the full picture — mounting hardware, eyelet ratings, pannier choice and how rack systems compare across bike types — it is all in [our complete guide to bikepacking racks and panniers](/posts/bikepacking-racks-panniers-guide).

## Bikepacking Bags vs Panniers, Answered First

Run soft bikepacking bags when the route is technical, when your kit fits in roughly 40 litres, and when you want the bike to turn like a bike. Run a rack and panniers when you need 60 litres or more, when resupply is days apart, and when you will break and rebuild a camp every morning for weeks.

Now the uncomfortable part, because almost every version of this comparison skips it: **soft bags are not lighter than panniers in any way that matters.** Compare like volumes instead of like traditions and the advantage can run the other way. CyclingAbout's volume-matched tally puts 38 litres of rear panniers — a 30-litre pannier pair, a titanium rack, an 8-litre dry bag and straps — at [853 grams, against 1,079 grams for a 37.5-litre bikepacking set of handlebar pack, seat pack and frame bag](https://www.cyclingabout.com/panniers-vs-bikepacking-bags/). In that comparison the panniers win by 226 grams.

So the weight argument is mostly folklore. The real differences are packing ergonomics, off-road handling and cost per litre, and only one of those three favours soft bags without an argument. Forget the tribal question of bikepacker or tourer. Three practical ones decide this: the surface you will ride, the volume you genuinely need, and whether your frame can take a rack at all. If the hardware is unfamiliar, our guide to [rack-based carry systems](/posts/bikepacking-racks-panniers-guide) covers racks and mounting; this piece is about the choice.

<Highlight label="The short version">
**Surface decides first.** Chunky singletrack and hike-a-bike: soft bags. Gravel, dirt road and pavement: either, and panniers once the trip gets long.

**Volume decides second.** Around 40 litres the two systems weigh roughly the same. Past 60 litres, panniers are the only honest answer.

**Your frame decides third.** No rack eyelets usually means a clamp-on rack rated near 10 kg rather than an eyelet-mounted rack rated to 40 kg.

**Cost per litre favours panniers, heavily.** A frame bag can cost more per litre than an entire pannier pair.

**Camp life favours panniers too.** You can open a pannier, lift it off and carry it inside. A seat pack has to be emptied to be used.

**Most experienced riders run both.** Frame bag, fork bags and a rear rack is not fence-sitting; it is putting the load where it belongs.

<SectionDivider variant="trail" />

## The Three Questions That Actually Decide It

### 1. What surface will you genuinely ride?

Be honest about the route before you spend anything: this question alone can rule a system out. Panniers widen the bike by the thickness of two bags, they catch brush and rut edges, and they hang weight outboard where it argues with every direction change. On chunky singletrack that is not a preference, it is a tax you pay in every corner.

Soft bags exist because of that tax. Juliet Elliott, writing for We Love Cycling, makes the case plainly: rackless setups keep the load ["evenly distributed and in line with the bike's frame"](https://www.welovecycling.com/wide/2024/09/13/rackless-or-panniers-choosing-your-perfect-bikepaking-setup-by-juliet-elliott/), which is what makes a loaded bike feel agile rather than reluctant. Add hike-a-bike and the gap widens: you can shoulder a bike wearing soft bags.

The inverse is where soft-bag evangelism falls apart. On gravel roads, forest roads and pavement, the handling penalty of panniers is small and the volume reward is large. **If your route is a dirt-road tour rather than a trail ride, choosing soft bags costs you litres and buys you almost nothing.**

### 2. How many litres do you genuinely need?

This is where the two systems stop being comparable. BIKEPACKING.com's side-by-side of a traditional four-pannier touring kit against a standard bikepacking kit puts the touring setup at [102 litres of capacity for 5,019 g (11 lb) of bags and racks, against 42.7 litres for 1,779 g (3.9 lb) of soft bags](https://bikepacking.com/gear/bikepacking-bags/panniers-vs-bikepacking-bags/). The same article notes what that ceiling does: cutting space from 102 litres to 43 cuts potential carried weight from 51 kg (112 lb) to 21.5 kg (47.4 lb).

Read those two sources together and a crossover appears. At around 38 litres, the pannier system in CyclingAbout's tally was the lighter of the two. At 50 litres it was not — four panniers and two racks came to 2,913 g against 2,123 g for an equivalent soft-bag kit, because the second rack and second pair of bags arrive at once. Above roughly 60 litres the comparison ends, because strap-on bags simply do not go there.

So the volume question has three answers. Under about 40 litres, choose on handling, because weight is a wash. Between 40 and 60, soft bags win on grams and lose on access. Above 60 — winter bag, four days of food, a stove, 6 litres of water — buy a rack.

### 3. Can your frame take a rack at all?

This question ends the debate for a lot of riders, and it belongs before any purchase. An eyelet-mounted steel rear rack is a serious piece of structure: the Tubus Logo Evo is listed by SJS Cycles at [an additional load of 40 kg for a rack weighing about 600 g](https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carriers-racks/black-tubus-logo-evo-rear-rack). Nothing you can strap to a saddle comes close to that.

Take the eyelets away and the numbers change hard. Seatpost-clamp racks are the usual workaround, and they tend to be rated a fraction as much: road.cc's review of one lists a [10 kg maximum load and the maker's warning that beyond it "the pannier rack may pivot and the stays could twist"](https://road.cc/content/review/elops-seat-post-pannier-rack-500-303745). The reviewer adds that they "wouldn't put this rack anywhere near an aero or carbon seatpost." A full-suspension frame or a bike with no mounts pushes you toward soft bags whether you like the idea or not.

Before concluding your bike cannot take a rack, read [the best rear racks for bikepacking](/posts/best-rear-racks-bikepacking) for what modern mounting looks like, and [mounting racks without eyelets](/posts/mounting-racks-without-eyelets) for the clamp, axle and seat-collar options. **If the only rack your frame accepts is rated to 10 kg, you do not have a volume advantage any more and the decision is already made.**

## Handling, Honestly — Where the Weight Sits

Two things move when you switch systems: how high the weight sits, and how far out. Panniers put mass low and outboard, near the axles; soft bags put it inboard and, in the seat pack and bar roll, considerably higher. Low and outboard resists being shoved around on washboard but adds inertia to every turn and bar correction. High and inboard keeps the bike narrow and willing, but a heavy seat pack sways under out-of-saddle efforts and unweights the front wheel on steep climbs.

<PullQuote>
Panniers put the weight low and wide; soft bags put it high and narrow. Neither is free — you are choosing which failure mode you would rather ride.
</PullQuote>

The seat pack's own spec sheet sets the ceiling. SJS Cycles lists the Ortlieb Seat-Pack at 16.5 litres, 490 g and a [maximum load of 5 kg (11 lb)](https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggagesaddle-packs-framebags/ortlieb-seatpack-dark-sand-165-litre). That is a density limit as much as a weight limit: 16.5 litres that may only hold 5 kg means a seat pack is for sleeping bags and insulation, never for food, water or tools. Riders who ignore that number are the ones whose seat packs wag.

Where the weight sits is also fixable without changing systems. Moving dense items down and forward — into a frame bag, or onto [front racks and low-riders](/posts/front-racks-bikepacking) — does more for handling than either camp claims, and our guide to [packing and weight distribution](/posts/pack-bikepacking-bags-weight-distribution) sets out that order.

The speed component is real but small. CyclingAbout measured an aerodynamic advantage of ["6% in my case"](https://www.cyclingabout.com/panniers-vs-bikepacking-bags/) for bikepacking bags over four panniers — roughly 17 minutes across 100 km of hilly riding — and reckons each extra kilogram costs 10 seconds on the flat to 90 seconds in the hills over that distance. Seventeen minutes decides a race. On a four-day tour it is one unhurried coffee.

## Volume and Cost Per Litre

Panniers win on litres per dollar, and the margin is not subtle. The Next Challenge's survey of bikepacking bags gives averages of [14 litres at £72 for handlebar bags, 13 litres at £96 for saddle bags and 7 litres at £78 for frame bags](https://thenextchallenge.org/bikepacking-bags-review/). Do the division: roughly £5 per litre on the bars, £7 under the saddle, £11 inside the frame. A soft-bag kit is three or four purchases at those rates, and the frame bag — the one piece you most want, because it carries low — is the worst value per litre of the lot.

Panniers invert that. Volume on a rack is bought in 20-to-40-litre increments, in a bag whose only complicated part is its mounting hardware, and the rack is a one-time purchase. Our roundup of [the best panniers for bikepacking](/posts/best-panniers-bikepacking) includes a genuine 20-litre pair for less than the average frame bag above.

Soft bags earn the premium back in a different currency: nothing is wasted. A frame bag fills a triangle of air no pannier can reach. **Pay the per-litre premium for a frame bag, because it is the most useful volume on the bike; be sceptical about paying it twice more for litres a rack would sell you cheaply.** Our [complete bikepacking bag and storage guide](/posts/complete-bikepacking-bag-storage-guide) lays that system out piece by piece.

## Packing and Camp Life: The Pannier Can Be Opened

Here is the advantage nobody puts on a spec sheet: a pannier is a box with a lid. You open it beside the bike, find one thing, close it and ride on, or unclip it and carry it into a hut in one hand. Elliott's point that panniers ["can be quickly removed and reattached, making setup and breakdown at campsites more efficient"](https://www.welovecycling.com/wide/2024/09/13/rackless-or-panniers-choosing-your-perfect-bikepaking-setup-by-juliet-elliott/) sounds minor until you have done it eighteen evenings in a row.

A seat pack is the opposite: a tapered tube, loaded from one end and compressed to stop it swaying. Riders who switch commonly report the consequence; one of BIKEPACKING.com's authors puts it as ["I literally can't remember how many times I packed, shifted everything around, unpacked and packed again"](https://bikepacking.com/gear/bikepacking-bags/panniers-vs-bikepacking-bags/). The organisational cost tends to follow: panniers let you dedicate a bag to food, one to cooking, one to clothing, while soft bags push gear wherever it fits — stove in one bag, fuel in another. Panniers cost width and buy access; soft bags do the reverse.

## Durability, Repairability and What Actually Fails

The two systems fail in different places, and only one is governed by a published standard. Racks have one: BSI records BS EN 14872:2006 as published on 27 February 2006 and [withdrawn on 31 July 2016](https://knowledge.bsigroup.com/products/bicycles-accessories-for-bicycles-luggage-carriers), replaced by [EN ISO 11243, "Cycles — Luggage carriers for bicycles — Requirements and test methods"](https://www.boutique.afnor.org/en-gb/standard/nf-en-iso-11243/cycles-luggage-carriers-for-bicycles-requirements-and-test-methods/fa177351/58945). Test-rig maker Hegewald and Peschke describes its dynamic test as [vertical sinusoidal vibration ramped to 7 Hz and stopped automatically after 100,000 cycles](https://www.hegewald-peschke.com/test-applications/test-stands-for-bicycle-racks-according-to-din-en-iso-11243/). That is a tell about the expected failure mode: a rack tends to be worn out by hours of chatter rather than finished by a single overload.

We could find no equivalent published standard for a strap-on seat pack, which is worth remembering when a maker quotes you a load figure. On the rack side, hooks, stays and mounting bolts are exactly what that vibration test simulates, so they are what you re-check at every resupply. On the soft-bag side it is seams, roll-tops and zips; BIKEPACKING.com flags zipper failure on fully-packed frame bags as a risk of the system.

Repairability cuts both ways. A cracked rack stay can be splinted with a hose clamp and ridden out; a snapped pannier hook usually cannot be improvised at all. Soft bags fail in stitching and fabric, which tape and a needle hold together for days — so fabric choice matters more than brand, which is why we treat it separately in [bag materials and durability](/posts/bikepacking-bag-materials-durability).

## The Hybrid Most Experienced Riders Actually Run

Watch what riders on long routes actually bolt on and the dogma collapses: a frame bag for dense items, fork bags or cargo cages for water low at the front, a small bar roll for sleep kit, and a rear rack carrying a dry bag or a compact pair of panniers for the bulk. That is not a cop-out: it is the only configuration that puts each item where its mass belongs rather than where its tradition belongs.

The reasoning is simple once you stop picking teams. Water is the densest thing you carry, so it wants to be low and near the axles — which is what [fork bags and cargo cages](/posts/fork-bags-cargo-cages-bikepacking) deliver. Sleeping bags are bulky and light, so they are the only things that belong high up, on the bars and under the saddle. Food is dense, awkward and opened three times a day, which is a pannier's job description.

Practically: build the soft-bag core first, because it fits any frame and moves to your next bike. Add a rear rack when a specific trip demands litres you cannot otherwise carry, and take it off again afterwards. **Buying a rack for the one three-week trip is cheaper than buying a second soft-bag system you will outgrow.**

## A Decision Checklist Before You Spend

Run these in order. Each has a consequence, not a score.

- **Does the route include sustained singletrack or hike-a-bike?** Yes: soft bags, and stop here.
- **Does your frame have rear rack eyelets, or a mount rated above 10 kg?** No: soft bags, or a clamp-on rack carrying very little.
- **Will you need more than about 60 litres?** Yes: a rack is in your future regardless of preference.
- **Is resupply more than two days apart at any point?** Yes: you are carrying food volume, which favours panniers.
- **Will you sleep somewhere you must carry gear into each night?** Yes: panniers, because they detach and have handles.
- **Is the trip two or three nights, close to home, on mixed surfaces?** Yes: soft bags, for less.
- **Are you buying for the trip you are taking, or the trip you imagine?** Buy for the real one.

<Tip>
Pack the exact kit you intend to carry into bin bags and measure it before buying any luggage. Measured litres beat guessed litres, and this one step prevents the expensive mistake: a 100-litre pannier system for a 35-litre habit, or a 40-litre soft-bag kit for a trip that needs a stove, a winter bag and four days of food.
</Tip>

## So, Bikepacking Bags or Panniers?

Soft bags for technical ground, short trips and narrow bikes. Racks and panniers for volume, long remote carries and daily camp routines. Between those extremes the systems weigh about the same, so choose on access, width and cost per litre rather than grams — and most riders are best served by a soft-bag core with a rack added for the trips that need one.

The one answer to avoid is buying a system to match an identity. **Measure your kit, look at your frame, look at the surface, then buy.** When you get to the hardware — eyelets, stays, load ratings and hooks that lock rather than rest — [our complete guide to bikepacking racks and panniers](/posts/bikepacking-racks-panniers-guide) picks the story up there.

Bikepacking Bags vs Panniers: Which Carry System Suits Your Trip

## How to Mount a Rack Without Eyelets: The Ranked Answer

Mount it to the axle first. An axle-mount rack that replaces your thru-axle or quick-release skewer is the strongest option on a frame with no eyelets. After that, in order: a strap-and-cradle rack triangulated off the seat tube and seatstays, a seatpost rack, then P-clamps. One rule overrides all of it — never clamp carbon.

That ranking is not about convenience or price. It is about where the load goes. A rack bolted to rated eyelets loads mounting points the frame designer drew, sized and signed off on. A rack clamped to a tube loads friction, and friction is a load path nobody engineered on your behalf.

Eyelets are the real gate on most decisions about [bikepacking racks and panniers](/posts/bikepacking-racks-panniers-guide), which is why this question gets asked so often and answered so badly. **Most "universal" mounting kits are universal in exactly one sense: they will physically attach to almost anything, which is not the same as being safe on it.** The clamp holding your rack is only as good as the tube it is squeezing — and on a loaded bike over washboard, the failure is rarely a slow sag you notice. It is sudden, and it happens near a spinning wheel.

So this is a safety article in how-to clothes: the options below are ranked by load path, and two of them end in no.

<Highlight label="The short version">
- **Axle mounting is the strongest answer.** A fit kit bolts the rack to the one part of the bike already built to carry your whole weight.
- **Strap-and-cradle racks are the best no-tools option**, and the good ones publish a halved rating for carbon frames.
- **A seatpost rack is a cantilever** — good to roughly 9 kg, and not for carbon or titanium posts.
- **P-clamps are a steel-or-aluminium last resort** with no rating behind them.
- **Never clamp carbon stays, posts or forks** unless that component's maker permits it. If a maker will not state a capacity, the silence is the spec.

## First, Check Whether You Really Have No Eyelets

Plenty of riders who think they have a bare frame have provision they have not found. Look in four places.

**The dropout and the seatstay.** Threaded bosses hide under paint, under stickers, and on the inboard face of the dropout where you will not see them without turning the bike over. Old Man Mountain's primer on eyelets describes the usual convention: where a frame has two sets near the dropout, the upper is intended for a rack and the lower for a fender.

**The brake bridge.** A single hole up there is almost always a fender mount. The same guide makes the point that one eyelet near the tyre at the bridge is a fender provision — and that the other holes on such a frame probably are too.

**Thru-axle provision.** You may not need frame eyelets at all. If your rear hub runs a 12 mm thru-axle, your bike already has the mount described in the next section.

**The fork.** Three-pack bosses, lowrider eyelets and mid-blade mounts are common now, and they turn a mounting question into a balance question — see [front racks and low-riders](/posts/front-racks-bikepacking) for which fork provision carries what.

<Warning>
A fender eyelet is not a rack eyelet. Old Man Mountain's eyelet primer puts the practical threshold around 20 lb: below that, fender mounts are usually strong enough; above it, the type of eyelet starts to matter. The same guide notes that eyelet-mounted racks rely on M5 bolts loaded in shear. Mount 15 kg of panniers to fender tabs and you are testing a bracket drawn for a mudguard weighing a few hundred grams.
</Warning>

Most conventional rear racks assume four threaded points and nothing else; our notes on [the best rear racks for bikepacking](/posts/best-rear-racks-bikepacking) separate those from racks that bring their own mounting.

<SectionDivider variant="trail" />

## Strongest Load Path: Axle-Mount Racks

An axle-mount rack clamps nothing. A fit kit replaces your thru-axle or quick-release skewer with one carrying threaded bosses, and the rack bolts to those. The load goes into the axle, through the dropouts, into the frame — the path that already carries you every time you sit down.

Old Man Mountain's Elkhorn is the category example, and its listed specifications are specific enough to quote: a load capacity of 25 lb (11.34 kg) in 6061 aluminium, at around 623 g for the short version with extenders, per retailer spec listings. Old Man Mountain describes its Fit Kits as a low, captured mounting point at the axle and states they are safe for carbon, steel, titanium and aluminium bikes and forks. **That is the strongest way to carry a rack load on a carbon bike that a maker will actually stand behind.**

Two honest limits. The rack still needs an upper attachment, usually a strap or clamp to the seatstay, so check what it is allowed to touch. And thread pitch and axle length are not negotiable: the wrong fit kit feels fine in the stand and wrong under load.

Failure mode: a mismatched or under-torqued axle — not survivable at speed, which is why you follow the axle maker's documentation to the letter.

<PullQuote>Universal means it will attach to anything. It does not mean anything should be attached to it.</PullQuote>

## Strap-and-Cradle Racks: The No-Tools Middle Ground

The AEROE Spider style of rack is the interesting arrival of recent years. Instead of bolts it braces off the seatstays on rubber-coated adapters held by tensioned straps, and per AEROE's spec page it has zero attachment to the seat post. Per the Spider rear rack's listing: four tear-proof straps, a stated load capacity of 16 kg, and 641 g bare.

Now read the other number, this one on AEROE's own spec page: **8 kg on carbon bikes.** The maker halves its own rating when the tube being squeezed is carbon. That is not marketing caution — it is a maker telling you what the clamping interface will and will not do, and the clearest evidence here that clamped carbon is a different structural problem from clamped metal.

Failure mode: strap creep and rotation rather than fracture. Straps relax as they take a set, and a cradle rotated ten degrees puts your dry bag nearer the tyre than you left it. That is recoverable if you check it — this category loosens before it lets go, which P-clamps do not.

## Seatpost Racks: A Cantilever, Rated Like One

A seatpost rack clamps the post and carries everything on an unsupported arm behind the saddle: the easiest mount here and the least comfortable structurally, because every kilogram is multiplied by its distance from the clamp.

Published ratings reflect that. Retail listings for Topeak's Beam seatpost racks state a 20 lb limit, and a comparable convertible rack, the TransIt, lists 22 lb (10 kg) — so treat roughly 9 kg as the ceiling. That TransIt listing also instructs owners not to attach the rack to carbon or titanium seatposts, and Topeak's own MTX BeamRack manual states the rack is not suitable or intended for use with carbon fibre seatposts.

Three further constraints: a dropper post rules this out entirely; a short exposed post may not give the clamp enough purchase; and because the load sits high and behind the axle, this is the worst of these options for handling. The yaw on a fast loose descent is mass doing what a lever does.

Failure mode: clamp slip under braking, or fatigue at the post. Neither announces itself politely.

## P-Clamps: Last Resort, Metal Only

P-clamps (P-clips, in British usage) wrap a tube and present a tab with a hole in it. Oldest trick in touring, and it works within limits nobody sells them with.

If you use them: steel or aluminium only, the widest clamp that fits, and a shim between clamp and tube. Riders in touring forum discussions commonly describe wrapping old inner tube around the stay first, to protect paint and stop the clamp creeping under vibration. Those same discussions make the structural point plainly: riders use P-clips to steady a rack at the top, and warn against trusting them with the load down at the dropouts. Hand them the vertical load and you are trusting friction between a thin steel band and a painted tube.

No P-clamp is sold with a bicycle luggage rating, and the rack it holds was rated with a different mount. **If you cannot name the figure your mount is rated to, you do not have a rated mount — you have a hope.**

Failure mode: slip, then shear. Usually under braking, usually loaded, usually without warning, because a clamp that has crept 5 mm looks identical to one that has not.

## The Honest Non-Rack Answers

Two options outrank an improvised mount on load path.

**A trailer.** A cargo trailer hitches at the rear axle and needs no frame provision. Burley's Flatbed, per its listed specifications, is rated for loads up to 100 lb at a trailer weight of 14.5 lb — four times the capacity of the strongest rack above, on a mount your frame already has. You pay in 6.5 kg of dead weight and a vehicle that is miserable on singletrack.

**Soft bags.** A frame bag, seat pack and bar roll need no eyelets, no clamps and no rating argument. The tradeoff is capacity and access speed, which we lay out in [bikepacking bags vs panniers](/posts/bikepacking-bags-vs-panniers); on a fork with three-pack bosses, [fork cages](/posts/fork-bags-cargo-cages-bikepacking) recover much of the volume a front rack would have given you. **If your bike is carbon and eyelet-free, this is the answer, and it is not a consolation prize.**

<SectionDivider variant="trail" />

## Carbon: The Section Where the Answer Is No

Clamping a carbon tube to carry a load is the one case here where we would not do it.

The industry's own hardware says so. Per retailer listings, Tubus's clamp set for seatstay mounting is not suitable for carbon frames, with a further warning not to overload the frame; and the Tubus LM-1 set, which exists specifically to get a lowrider onto a fork without eyelets, cannot be used on carbon forks, with cracking the fork given as the stated risk. Park Tool's guidance on its internal seat tube clamp generalises it: clamping directly onto carbon fibre and other ultra-thin materials can cause inadvertent frame damage — which is why a tool exists to hold a frame without squeezing a tube.

Torque is not the whole story, and that is where riders talk themselves into trouble. A torque figure controls how hard the fastener pulls; the damage depends on clamp width, how well the clamp radius matches the tube, whether the wall is thin at that spot, and how many thousand vibration cycles the joint sees. Aluminium dents and warns you. Carbon does not advertise; it cracks. And a loaded rack adds cyclic bending and twisting the layup was never asked about.

<Warning>
Do not clamp a rack to carbon seatstays, a carbon seatpost or a carbon fork. Read your frame or fork maker's own documentation first: those who permit rack loads say so explicitly and give a figure. If yours will not take a rack, the real options are an axle-mount system whose maker states carbon compatibility, soft bags, or a different bike — see [travel-friendly bikepacking bikes](/posts/travel-friendly-bikepacking-bikes) for frames that take racks as designed.
</Warning>

## Doing the Install So It Survives the First Hour of Washboard

Hardware choice is most of this, but a good mount installed badly fails like a bad one. Clean the tube, inspect it for dents, chips and cracks, and never clamp over a flaw. Put a rubber shim or a strip of old inner tube between metal and paint, to spread pressure and stop the clamp abrading to bare tube, where corrosion starts on steel. Use a medium-strength thread locker on every rack bolt, not the permanent grade; vibration backs fasteners out whether you believe in it or not.

On torque, the rule is restraint: use the lower of the two published figures — your rack's documentation and the clamp or component maker's spec — and read the rack's instructions first, because rack bolts and frame clamps are not one spec. We will not print a number; the only one that matters is in your hardware's paperwork. If neither party publishes one, reconsider the mount. The companion piece on [rack weight limits and bolt torque](/posts/bike-rack-weight-limits-bikepacking) covers why rated capacities and fastener specs travel together.

Then test it where failure costs nothing. Load the rack to the weight you intend to carry, ride a slow lap of a car park, stand on the pedals, brake hard, and roll off a kerb twice. Check every bolt and strap, then again after the first hour on real ground — that is when clamps take their set.

<Tip>
Make re-torquing a habit with a trigger, not a date: after the first loaded hour, each morning before packing, and after any long corrugated descent. Forty seconds with a multi-tool is the difference between catching a loose clamp and discovering one.
</Tip>

## Downgrade the Number You Were Planning to Carry

An improvised mount deserves a reduced load, and the rack's rating is not your target.

Start from the lower of the two numbers — the rack's stated capacity and the mount's, if it has one — then take a margin off, because the load path is improvised. AEROE halving its Spider rating for carbon is a fair model for what a maker thinks a weaker interface is worth. On an unrated P-clamp install we would treat roughly 9 kg as the ceiling for the whole rig. Arrangement matters as much as mass: dense items low and forward of the rear axle, nothing heavy cantilevered off the back of the deck. Our guide to [weight distribution when packing](/posts/pack-bikepacking-bags-weight-distribution) covers that; the [rack weight limits](/posts/bike-rack-weight-limits-bikepacking) piece covers the numbers.

Remember what a rating assumes. EN 14872:2006, the European standard for bicycle luggage carriers — which standards bodies list as superseded by EN ISO 11243 — covers carriers intended for permanent mounting above or adjacent to the wheels, per its published scope. A capacity tested on a permanently mounted carrier was tested with a mounting in mind. Change the mounting and you have changed the test.

## What We Would Actually Do

If your frame takes a thru-axle, buy an axle-mount rack with a fit kit matched to your exact axle standard. If it does not, a strap-and-cradle rack on metal tubes is the next most trustworthy thing, with the maker's rating treated as a limit rather than a goal. A seatpost rack is fine for an overnighter under 9 kg. P-clamps are a steel-frame workaround, loaded light and checked daily.

And if the bike is carbon and eyelet-free, **the money is better spent on soft bags than on hardware that voids your frame warranty for 8 kg of carrying capacity.** That is the sentence we would want said to us before the order went in.

Where that leaves you in the wider system — which rack, which bags, whether a rack at all — is the subject of our guide to [choosing a rack and pannier setup](/posts/bikepacking-racks-panniers-guide). Decide the mount first; everything after that is shopping.
